INTRODUCTION Discrimination between social groups is often debated in many fields with an aim to measure and assess the impacts on the affected groups and individuals. This paper uses a formalized method to analyze the wage differential between men and women in order to determine what portion of the wage differential is due to different market skills and what portion is due to discrimination. Although numerous studies measured the magnitude of earnings differences between men and women in the U.S. labor market prior to Ronald Oaxaca, his work, “Male – Female Wage Differentials in Urban Labor Markets” serves as the first model that attempts to not only measure the magnitude of the wage difference but also to “decompose” differences in earnings due to discrimination and differences due to skill (Oaxaca 1973). By following the same method of the Oaxaca decomposition, the aim of this paper is to measure the male – female wage differential in the California labor market using data from the 2002 Current Population Survey.
